Fuel Cells (Scotland) Limited has pioneered a unique design of seal-less planar fuel cell stack using commercially
available materials in a simplified structure, that has remarkable "cost down" properties.
Current SOFC technologies are still at early development and remain expensive compared with conventional and other
renewable electricity generation, with most systems costing on the high end of $3,000 per kW. Fuel Cells (Scotland)
Limited recognise that high power density fuel cells are being developed around the world and forecast costs are tumbling
fast as mass production techniques are developed. The remaining obstacle to final cost reduction is the design and build of
the fuel cell stack. In contrast to most stack developers who use highly complex designs, sophisticated materials and
sealant, the Fuel Cell (Scotland) Ltd stack design is simple and easy to manufacture and is designed to meet a $500 per kW target.
